Warhawk Air Museum: Preserving History, Honoring Heroes, and Educating Generations
Idaho Estate Planning connects with local organizations throughout Idaho. In the heart of Idaho’s Treasure Valley sits a place where history isn’t just remembered, it’s brought to life. The Warhawk Air Museum in Nampa is a powerful tribute to American veterans and a deeply respected destination for families, educators, and patriots of all ages. What began as a personal passion project became a one-of-a-kind institution dedicated to telling the stories of those who served.
From War Planes to Personal Stories
The museum’s origin is as heartfelt as its mission. In the 1980s, John and Sue Paul moved to Idaho with a growing collection of restored WWII aircraft. Over time, something remarkable began happening: strangers started leaving military keepsakes, uniforms, medals, and photographs at their hangar door. People were looking for a way to preserve their loved ones’ stories. The Pauls listened, and the Warhawk Air Museum was born.
Today, visitors can see beautifully restored planes like the P-40 Warhawk, the F-86 Sabre, the MiG-17, and even a UH-1 Huey helicopter. But it’s not just about the aircraft—it’s about the people behind them. Each display is rich with stories, memories, and context that bring history to life.
A Place for Veterans to Connect
The museum isn’t just about honoring the past; it’s also about building community in the present. One of its most beloved programs is the Kilroy Coffee Klatch, a monthly gathering for veterans of all service eras. What started with a dozen WWII vets has grown to hundreds of regular attendees. It’s a space for camaraderie, healing, and sharing stories—some of which are told for the first time.
The museum also participates in the Veterans History Project, partnering with the Library of Congress to record and archive the life stories of veteransns. These interviews go beyond military service; stories include childhood, post-service life, and reflections on what it all meant. It’s a powerful way to preserve living history for future generations.
Expanding the Legacy: Honoring 9/11 and the Global War on Terror (GWOT) Generation
As history moves forward, so does the museum. A major new addition is underway: a Global War on Terror (GWOT) exhibit, opening September 13, 2025. This space will honor those who served in post-9/11 conflicts like Iraq and Afghanistan and include a dedicated area to reflect on the events of September 11, 2001.
The new wing is a space for younger veterans to share their stories, and for their families, especially their children, to see their legacy honored in the same way earlier generations have been. It’s a powerful reminder that history isn’t just something that happened long ago; it’s still being written today.
